This reflection is from Curio Lab.

Why do brief interactions with strangers sometimes feel more noticeable than expected?

A brief note

Some brief interactions seem to remain slightly present even after they end.

Deep reflection

Most brief interactions pass without leaving much behind.

A few words at a counter. A small exchange while waiting. A door held open. A short moment of coordination between two people who are not expected to meet again.

Nothing large takes place.

There is no reason for the moment to stay.

Still, some of these interactions remain slightly noticeable.

Not as memories in a strong sense, and not because anything important was said.

Only as small moments that keep their shape a little longer than expected.

A tone of voice, the timing of a pause, the way the exchange began and ended, the quiet arrangement of two people sharing a brief part of the same space.

Then the day continues.

The interaction is over almost immediately, yet something about it may remain lightly present beside other passing moments.

Some brief interactions seem to stay nearby for a little while after they are over.
